1st Grade
First grade is an important stepping stone in each child’s life. First graders build upon the skills that they have learned previously in pre-school and kindergarten and begin to read independently with understanding.
One goal of first grade is for each student to gain a lifetime love of reading, especially God’s Word. A strong phonics program is the first step in helping to fulfill that goal. We also use the 6 + 1 writing traits program to teach the students to effectively write a story one element at a time. The students are given opportunities on a daily basis to creatively express themselves by writing in their journals and writing various stories throughout the year.
Math in first grade includes such skills as: adding and subtracting with up to three digit numbers, carrying to the hundreds place, telling time, measurement, Roman numerals, greater than and less than, counting by 5’s, 10’s, 2’s, and 3’s, coins, number recognition, place value, calendars, bar graphs, fractions, and an introduction to multiplication.
First grade Bible class is a time for worship, singing, prayer, memory work, Bible stories, and life application lessons. It introduces the nature of God, the plan of salvation, people from the Bible and the lessons from their lives. It challenges students to make a decision to follow Christ and grow in Him. It also incorporates lessons on Christian character development.

I came to Lakewood Park Christian School as a freshman and attended here throughout high school. It was while tutoring younger students here that I felt God leading me into the teaching profession. I graduated from Lakewood Park in 2002. I then attended Taylor University, Fort Wayne, and graduated in May of 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education. I have since been licensed by the state of Indiana and by ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).
Two weeks after I graduated from Taylor, I was married to my husband, Tyler. We live in Leo and have two miniature dachshunds named Harley and Daisy. I enjoy collecting children’s literature, and my husband is glad to have some room on the bookshelves at home since I have my own classroom!
It is such a privilege to be able to interact with these children on a daily basis. It is such a blessing to see little ones growing academically, physically, emotionally, socially, and most importantly, spiritually!
