1st Grade
First grade is an important stepping stone in each child’s life. First graders build upon the skills that they have learned previously in pre-school and kindergarten and begin to read independently with understanding.
One goal of first grade is for each student to gain a lifetime love of reading, especially God’s Word. A strong phonics program is the first step in helping to fulfill that goal. We also use the 6 + 1 writing traits program to teach the students to effectively write a story one element at a time. The students are given opportunities on a daily basis to creatively express themselves by writing in their journals and writing various stories throughout the year.
Math in first grade includes such skills as: adding and subtracting with up to three digit numbers, carrying to the hundreds place, telling time, measurement, Roman numerals, greater than and less than, counting by 5’s, 10’s, 2’s, and 3’s, coins, number recognition, place value, calendars, bar graphs, fractions, and an introduction to multiplication.
First grade Bible class is a time for worship, singing, prayer, memory work, Bible stories, and life application lessons. It introduces the nature of God, the plan of salvation, people from the Bible and the lessons from their lives. It challenges students to make a decision to follow Christ and grow in Him. It also incorporates lessons on Christian character development.

Mrs. Becky Johnson
I graduated in 1991 from Cornerstone University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. I have endorsements for Kindergarten and 1-9 in Language Arts. I am also certified with the Association of Christian School International (ACSI).
I subbed the first two years after graduation in Michigan, where I am originally from, then stayed at home for the next eight years until our third daughter went into Lakewood’s Pre-k program. I started subbing as a teacher’s aide in the spring of 2001 in the First grade, and joined the staff at Lakewood to fill the First grade position that came open.
My husband, three daughters and I attend Lakewood Park Baptist Church where my husband and I have served in the children’s church ministries as well as the youth group where we were youth leaders under the youth pastor.
I enjoy teaching First grade as the students really blossom in their reading skills. They are so excited when they learn new words and show expression! I appreciate being able to integrate Biblical truth in our daily lessons and finding teachable moments throughout the week to teach the love of God.

Mrs. Jenny Moore
I graduated in 1993 from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. I am licensed in Indiana to teach first through sixth grade and am certified with the Association of Christian Schools International. My graduate classes have also been taken through Indiana University.
After graduating in December of 1993, I subbed for the remainder of the school year. I was hired to teach first grade here at Lakewood Park in June,1994. It was such a blessing to be given the opportunity to teach in a Christian school since most of my other teaching experiences had taken place in the public school setting.
I am a graduate of Bible Study Fellowship International and currently attend County Line Church of God. I have previously taught Sunday School, Children’s Church, and worked in an AWANA Cubbies program for several years.
Teaching first graders here at LPCS has been wonderful! Their enthusiasm for learning and love of God’s Word never ceases to amaze me. We are given the opportunity each day to teach spiritual truths along with language arts, math, science, and social studies.

Mrs. Randa Witmer
I came to Lakewood Park Christian School as a freshman and attended here throughout high school. It was while tutoring younger students here that I felt God leading me into the teaching profession. I graduated from Lakewood Park in 2002. I then attended Taylor University, Fort Wayne, and graduated in May of 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education. I have since been licensed by the state of Indiana and by ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).
Two weeks after I graduated from Taylor, I was married to my husband, Tyler. We live in Leo and have two miniature dachshunds named Harley and Daisy. I enjoy collecting children’s literature, and my husband is glad to have some room on the bookshelves at home since I have my own classroom!
It is such a privilege to be able to interact with these children on a daily basis. It is such a blessing to see little ones growing academically, physically, emotionally, socially, and most importantly, spiritually!
