5th Grade
Fifth grade is yet another time of transition, where students learn to be more independent. The students stay with their homeroom teacher for all subjects, except history and math. Bible class is an exciting time as students learn to work independently in the Word, finding answers for themselves and then meeting once a week in a circle to discuss the lesson. Our focus is on the lives of Samuel, Saul, David and Solomon. There is a strong emphasis not only on studying the Bible chapter by chapter, but also on personal application. Perhaps one of the most exciting things about fifth grade is being a part of the annual Living Nativity!
We begin the year studying butterflies. To conclude the unit, students are allowed to choose from an art, real, or internet butterfly collection. In the fall we study trees and complete a leaf collection. We also study penguins. Penguin Day is celebrated with power point presentations, penguin poetry, a black and white feast, and many other penguin activities!
In history, fifth grade students take a journey through John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.
Field Trips
In May, students go to Chicago to visit Shedd’s Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. We also eat dinner at the Rainforest Café.

Mrs. Susan Grate
After attending the University of Maryland and Harding University, I graduated from IPFW in 1979 with a degree in elementary education. I taught second grade for four years at Butler Elementary, then obtained my master’s degree from IPFW in 1987. I came to Lakewood Park Christian School in 1993 and taught second grade for six years. Presently I am teaching fifth grade.
Raised in Maryland, I was married and moved to Indiana in 1978. My husband, Matt, and I have three children. Joel, Kyle and Jennifer all graduated from Lakewood. I have two grandchildren. Besides my family and teaching, I enjoy gardening, both vegetable and perennials. I love to study the Bible. I attended Bible Study Fellowship for 11 years. I also enjoy reading. My family presently attends County Line Church of God.
I have a passion for Christian education because I can teach all subjects from a biblical perspective. I especially enjoy teaching history from a providential perspective and with an emphasis on the time line, as well as Bible and reading. It is exciting to teach on such a beautiful campus, with other teachers who share the same passion for educating children from a biblical worldview.

Miss Anne Jacquay
My name is Anne Jacquay, but I am “Annie” to everyone except, of course, my students! I graduated from LPCS in 2000 after spending five years here as a student. I graduated from Huntington College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Bible and Religion. Dayspring Community Church in Auburn is the local Body I call home. There I began, and am active in, a small group for young adults in their twenties.
I love teaching, and while I will readily admit that I never expected the Lord to bring me back to Lakewood, I am absolutely delighted to be able to teach at a Christian school. My favorite quote from one of my fifth grade students describing me is as follows: “Miss Jacquay is the pit of coolness.” When I questioned her, the student couldn’t explain just exactly what this meant, but she assured me it was a good thing!
