Mr. Phillip Chapman Named New Elementary Principal
After an extensive search process, we believe we have found the right person for the elementary principal position. He emerged from over 25 possible candidates as God's choice for Lakewood Park Christian School.
We would like you to join us Thursday, March 11th, 2010, at 6:00 PM in the school dining hall to meet Mr. Chapman, get to know him, and welcome him to Lakewood.
We are so incredibly grateful that we found such a godly and qualified candidate. Phil and his wife Shari and their three children will join us early this summer. We couldn't be more excited about what Phil and his family will bring to this ministry.
Please plan on joining us March 11th to meet Mr. Chapman and hear how he plans to serve you and your students in the days and years ahead.
Golfers Needed for 2010 Golf Marathon
In a few short weeks we will be hosting our fourteenth annual Golf Marathon to benefit the students of Lakewood Park. This is a terrific time of fellowship and makes an unbelievable difference for the school and its mission. We are in the process of looking for individuals or teams that would be willing to consider joining us in this year’s event.
The event will take place at Autumn Ridge on Monday, May 10th.
We will be hosting a Kick-Off Event on Thursday, March 11th at Eel River Golf from 9:00 PM - Midnight. Anyone interested in golfing is encouraged to attend this event.
If you would be willing to consider joining us for these events, please contact Julie Hess at ext. 236 or by email to jhess@lakewoodpark.org.
Open House Contest
Our annual Open House is scheduled for Feb. 18th. One of the best ways to promote our school is through referrals from current families. When a family comes to the Open House, they are asked to complete an information sheet that includes how they heard about Lakewood Park. If a family that you have invited to the Open House, or just shared your experiences at Lakewood Park with puts your name down as the family they heard from, you will automatically be entered into a drawing for a $100 tuition credit in addition to the $200 tuition credit that you get if the student enrolls! The $100 credit is yours to keep whether they enroll or not. Only one name will be chosen, however you can enter as many times as you would like. So start sharing your story today!
Around the Block with the Fourth and Fifth Grade Community
In August 2009, 29 fifth graders, 43 fourth graders, their parents, one fearless aide, and four teachers bravely embraced the idea of creating a fourth and fifth grade community in which each member would strive to learn something new every day, live to impact his or her surroundings, and love one another in Christ.
It is January 2010, just five months later, and our understanding of community has increased. The following responses by students reflect some of the learning this year of community and what it means to be in a community:
What does it mean to be part of a community?
– It is like being part of a team. – Kayla Tatman, fifth grade
– Being a part of a community is when you become one with other people. Being in a community has really made a difference in my life. I say that because I know that I can be one with so many different people. – Alyssa Seiler, fifth grade
– Encouraging and helping one another – Anna Pfeffer, fourth grade
– It helped me understand the meaning of community. I already knew the meaning but it hit on me that it isn’t all about you. – Kaleigh Collins, fifth grade
– To be part of a community is to be a citizen and give the fruits of your labor to help the community. –Victor Hughes, fourth grade
– It means you have to sacrifice different things to be a good leader and do what others want instead of what you want. – Carter Morin, fourth grade
What have you or others learned or received from being in the fourth and fifth grade community?
I have learned discipline and that I can be more than me. – Morgan Eberhard, fifth grade
– If you have a problem with getting everything your own way, then you find out that you can’t do that in a community. – Brennen Young, fifth grade
– I can serve others. – Seth Stiverson, fifth grade
– You have to do what’s right for everyone else, not just you. – Harmon Grimm, fourth grade
– You get what you give. – Aspen Pflughoeft, fourth grade
– I have received help and ideas. – Chase Yoder, fourth grade
– You get rewarded for doing the right thing. – Trevor Day, fifth grade
What have you given to the fourth and fifth grade community?
– I have given the community a joyful spirit. –Rebekah Priskorn, fourth grade
– I have given my time, effort, and knowledge. –Jenna Habisch, fourth grade
– God wants you to put time and effort into communities. – Carsten White, fourth grade
– I have given my time, effort, and pencils to the community. – Nicanor Clear, fourth grade
Do you think God wants you to live in community with others?
– He wants me in one so I can have relationships. –Luke SanGiacomo, fifth grade
– I think God wants us to live in community otherwise we would be lonely. – Emily Bussen, fourth grade
– God wants us to help and love each other so we can develop character traits, like discipline and kindness. I guess in the whole picture, this small community is teaching us what we need to do in the big world. – David McComb, fourth grade
– I believe God wants everyone to be in some type of community. I think that because I think he is trying to push us a little. He wants us to get stronger with the actions we do. I think that is helped by being in a community. – Hadyn Faur, fourth grade
“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Engaging the World Through Power Plus - Mrs. Carol Bergmeier, HS English
The other day I was asked to tell about something exciting that had happened this school year. Without hesitation, I said, “PowerPlus!” PowerPlus is a Wednesday afternoon program at Lakewood Park when academics cease and adults work with a small group of teens in order to do community projects, discuss current situations, meditate on the Word or God, and have fun! Mrs. Schlotterback and I have the privilege of working with eleven freshmen through senior girls this year. We call our group the M & M’s, which stands for Mary and Martha. We try to instill within the girls that there needs to be a balance in their lives as Mary represents sitting at the feet of Christ and Martha represents serving others.
We base this challenge on Matthew 22:37-39:
Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
I have lost much sleep over these girls, that is, when they spend the night at my house and we all stay up too late. On the Wednesdays when we stay at school, the girls lead the group in prayer, devotions, and activities. Watching them take ownership of the meetings and exercise their leadership abilities gives me the “warm fuzzies.” Of course, someone always brings in a snack for the meetings. Every other Wednesday afternoon, though, the girls are divided into four smaller groups to visit and clean four different homes. It is our great delight to be involved in the lives of Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Ramsey, Mrs. Strine, and Mrs. Mitchell. I personally enjoy listening to the girls chatter about the things they do at these homes and how much they love to serve these ladies.
On the Wednesday before Christmas, the M & M’s had a little afternoon party for “our special ladies.” We listened to one of the seniors give a devotional, ate some cheesecake, played a game of “SNOWY” Bingo (made up by one of the girls), presented to the ladies a keepsake booklet with bios and pictures of all involved in the M & M’s, and enjoyed a time of chatter with everyone. As I sat there observing what was going on that afternoon, I could not help but think that education here at Lakewood is more than just books and facts. These teenage girls were gaining godly character and learning to serve others by rubbing shoulders with these saintly women. I really look forward to next spring when the girls will host a tea luncheon for the ladies. Oh, how I praise the Lord for the opportunities I have had to work with these girls!
Attention All Volunteer Drivers:
Thank you for all the driving that you have done for Lakewood Park Christian School. It has been a tremendous help to our ministry here with students. Initially, the school paid for many DOT physicals for volunteers. Because of the advanced notice we now have for this process and the budget concerns, the school will no longer be able to pay for the physicals every other year. We are expecting that many of you are getting regular physicals and can plan the DOT physical in part of your regular health care every other year. Most of you should have at least six months from now until the physical is due. You are still welcome to use our health care provider and pay through us at the rate of $45 if that is a savings for you. Thanks for your help and understanding on this.
Re-Registration
Just a reminder that Monday, February 15th is the last day to take advantage of our $50 discount for early registration for next year. Please turn in your paperwork and $50 to the office. If you have a new student to register in your family now is also the time to get that taken care of. We will be having our Open House on February 18th from 6-8pm and will be accepting new applications from non-school families. If you have any questions or need new paperwork please contact Jessica Davis at ext. 216.
