Elementary Chapel Update - Stephanie Longbrake
Though it may seem like we've missed more morning hours at school than we can count, we've been blessed that most of our school delays have not been on chapel days! 2010 elementary chapels are off to a great start.
Our virtue for January was Discipline, doing what you need to do even when you don't feel like it. Each week we talked about disciplining one part of our bodies; we began with the mind. We learned that Daniel believed that God's ways were right all the time, and that he would decide to obey even when things didn't make sense (Daniel 1). Mr. Collins was a fantastic chapel speaker in January. He showed us that spiritual discipline can't be bought from an infomercial, but that it is something we work at with God's help. The LPCS drama club, Active Faith, was a special guest to end our month talking about Discipline.
Two weeks ago we started February's virtue, Service. Instead of teaching the kids what I know about service, together we wrote our own definition. We made lists of little and big ways to serve, reminding ourselves that God is more concerned about our servant attitude than the size of our service. The Bottom Lines for this month are:
-Treat others the way Jesus would treat them.
-Treat people better than you have to.
-Do everything you do for others like you're doing it for God.
Part of our focus for this month is 'secret service'. 2nd-5th grade students have been challenged to serve another student secretly so that the receiver doesn't know where the help came from. Students who are served are journaling about the event, and we're collecting secret service stories. For the rest of the month, we'll read in chapel what secret services took place each week. Less than 24 hours in, the boxes were already filling with secret service stories; it was very exciting!
I'm confident there are big things for us to learn together in chapel this year. I am excited to see how God moves and shows us parts of Himself we've never looked at before!
Golfers Needed for 2010 Golf Marathon
In a few short weeks we will be hosting our fourteenth annual Golf Marathon to benefit the students of Lakewood Park. This is a terrific time of fellowship and makes an unbelievable difference for the school and its mission. We are in the process of looking for individuals or teams that would be willing to consider joining us in this year's event.
The event will take place at Autumn Ridge on Monday, May 10th.
We will be hosting a free Kick-Off Event on Thursday, March 11th at Eel River Golf from 9:00 PM - Midnight. Anyone interested in golfing is encouraged to attend this event.
If you would be willing to consider joining us for these events, please contact Julie Hess at ext. 236 or by email to jhess@lakewoodpark.org.
Mr. Chapman Meet & Greet
We would like you to join us Thursday, March 11th, 2010, at 6:00 PM in the school dining hall to meet Mr. Chapman, get to know him, and welcome him to Lakewood.
We are so incredibly grateful that we found such a godly and qualified candidate. Phil and his wife Shari and their three children will join us early this summer. We couldn't be more excited about what Phil and his family will bring to this ministry.
Please plan on joining us March 11th to meet Mr. Chapman and hear how he plans to serve you and your students in the days and years ahead.
Elementary Science Update - Mr. Brian Rayle
There has been a lot going on in science in fourth and fifth grade this year. Students have gotten to enjoy several hands-on activities and project-based learning units. We started the school year in outer space, learning about the planets and stars. The rest of the first half of the year we focused on learning about life sciences. Students have studied many types of mammals as well as vertebrates, reptiles, and fish . During our study of fish, we actually got to try a dissection to see how God designed the internal structures of fish for life in the water. During the mammals unit, students had a great time making mammal posters. Each student had a specific mammal that they researched and made a poster with interesting facts and pictures. Right now, we are working on geology, studying the structure of the earth and the different materials that can be found in the Earth's crust. Coming up the rest of this year we will be study engines and rockets. We will be making our own rockets to launch. We will also be studying light and energy. The fourth quarter we will work on health and learn how God designed our bodies and how we can take proper care of them.
Devotional thought from Science Class
What kind of rock will you be?
We have recently been discovering how God designed the structure and formation of different types of rocks. Just as God designed rocks to have structure and a strong foundation, He wants to see us as His children form a strong foundation of spiritual discipline. Some rocks are formed by sediment building layer by layer, little by little until they become solid. That is how God designed our spiritual journeys, through spiritual discipline and daily surrendering our lives we build our spiritual foundation little by little. Some of the rocks don't stop as sedimentary rocks, they are changed through changes in heat and pressure into metamorphic rocks. Metamorphic rocks are stronger, more solid, more beautiful and last much longer than they were as sedimentary rocks. As Christians, God allows us to go through trials. The struggles and temptations we endure are the changes in pressure and heat that will change us from newly formed rocks into solid, long-lasting changed people that God calls us to be. Are you satisfied being a new rock or will you be one of the changing rocks that God uses?
