The Ripple Effect - Julie Hess, Panther Paws Editor
I wasn't at work on Friday, March 5th. I had an appointment that I needed to be at. If I had known what was going to take place at Lakewood that day, the appointment would have been rescheduled. As the afternoon went on I started receiving text messages, seeing Facebook updates and hearing bits and pieces about something truly of GOD happening at Lakewood. I got home and checked my email and saw an email from Randy Carman with details of the days events, and a letter from Rob Atkins describing the chapel. I read through the email a few times and certain things just seemed to hit me.
She was looking to it to provide her with significance, satisfaction, control, and contentment. It never provided what it promised. How many times in our lives do we do that? So many different areas, so many different "saviors" that we think will fill the needs that we have. We may not have all struggled with an eating disorder, but we have different things that we think will help us feel satisfied and content. For me, personally, money is something that I can easily place in that role of "savior". I feel like if I just have a little more, then everything will be better. There have even been times when I've been tempted to not have our daughter enrolled at Lakewood, because if she wasn't, we would have extra money that we could use to pay for other things, and to feel more content and secure. Nothing could be further from the truth.
She admitted it was not something that could have been done on her own, but instead, God changed her desires. Everyone wants to feel content - but am I going to get that from having a few extra dollars in the checking account, or by knowing that Kayla is in a place that daily helps her grow closer to the one true Savior?
I've shared with some here at Lakewood that each year when re-enrollment time comes around we ask Kayla to tell us why she wants to be here. There has never been one time when the decision was made lightly, or easily. A true financial sacrifice is made every year. I hate that we are tempted by the extra cushion in our checking account, but we have to also be good stewards of the gifts that God has given us. And for us, we have to know that Lakewood is the right decision for us. Every year though, it becomes evident to us, through small ways, and sometimes HUGE ways - like what happened Friday, that God is very much in control of every detail of what is happening at Lakewood Park. We want to be a part of that, we want our daughter to be a part of that. We want to choose to have our contentment come from the true Savior, and not from the sinful desires we have to find contentment in financial wealth.
Many "ripples" from Friday's events are being felt by students, staff, and school families. Please pray that the work He is doing here continues to make impacts in the days and months ahead.
