Fourth & Fifth Grade Community Block Update - by Lauri Carnahan
Our fourth and fifth graders are so excited about the new 4/5 Community Block! Having four teachers who are passionate about their subject areas, accessing a new website just for them, reciting a meaningful student pledge, and being part of a money reward system has the students enthusiastic about their school year. My fifth graders commented in the following ways:

"The best part of being in the community block is working together. I think the community is fun because usually you just work with your class but we work to have a better community." -Alyssa Seiler

"I like the 4/5 Community because you can earn money to spend at the store."
- Brennen Young

"You don't get as bored with one teacher. The teachers each have their own fun way of doing things." -Ann Hollman

"The best part of being in the 4/5 Community Block is that the teachers are close together. It's fun meeting new teachers when we switch classes. Also, it's neat how each teacher teaches something different." -Justin White

"One of the things I like about the block is the website. The website is so cool!" -Megan Stonestreet

Elementary Chapel Update - by Stephanie Longbrake
I would venture to say that I'm the first person to get excited about a two hour school delay; however, this is not the case on Tuesdays. Being a part of elementary chapel at Lakewood is one of the highlights of my school year. It is a special chance for multiple classes to meet, worship, and learn together.

This year we're learning about and trying to adopt nine different virtues. Each month we focus on one of them; right now we're learning about Responsibility. We've had some great guest speakers including our new P.E. teacher Mr. Hibbard, and a former Lakewood teacher, Mrs. Rayle. As an elementary school we are memorizing a verse from Luke 16; "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much."

Each week we read a new "Bottom Line" statement to help us think about and apply our virtue for the month. The Bottom Lines for this month are:
-When you trust God, you become someone who can be trusted.
-When you can be trusted with a little, you can be trusted with a lot.
-Your actions always speak louder than your words.

A new element to chapel this year is the Chapel Crew for 3rd-5th grades. Students have the opportunity to serve in chapel. Chapel Crew members sing on a worship team, act in dramas, and read Scripture during chapel. They know that being in this position also means that they need to set an example for younger students in words and actions. It is exciting to see them using their gifts this way.

I'm confident there are big things for us to learn together in chapel this year. I am excited to see how God moves and shows us parts of Himself we've never looked at before!

77 Times to Perform at Jog-a-Thon
77 Times is a local Christian rock band that recently opened up for John Tesh in concert. Some of the band members are students at Lakewood. The band has agreed to perform in concert for the students and families of Lakewood during the Jog-a-thon and Carnival on September 25th. Band members include Evan Turner, Alex Renbarger, Jesse Hardiek & Hogan Brecount. The band has over a dozen original songs with a positive Christian message. Lyrics typically focus on forgiveness, grace, and the importance of leaning on God to get through life's struggles.

Congratulations to Rob & Melissa Atkins on the birth of their daughter,
Addison Lael, born on August 27, 2009.

Jog-a-Thon 2009
By the time you are reading this, we will have completed our third week of raising funds for Jog-a-Thon 2009. We anticipated funds being lower this year due to the economy, and that is definitely shaping out to be the situation. However, we strongly believe in the power of prayer - faithfully believe that God will continue to provide for His ministry here at Lakewood Park as He has done in the past. Please take some time this weekend to prayerfully consider what you as a family can do to help us reach our goal for this year.

The fundraising is the need that gets fulfilled by having the Jog-a-Thon, but there is a huge benefit that is just simply a bonus to the event and that is the fellowship that takes place among the students, faculty and staff, and families throughout the day. Please, if you are at all available, we would encourage you to come out and be a part of this wonderful event with us.

If you should have any questions in regards to the Jog-a-Thon or carnival, please contact Julie Hess at ext. 236 or jhess@lakewoodpark.org. Should you have any questions regarding sponsorship, please contact Colleen McCarthy at ext. 219 or cmccarthy@lakewoodpark.org.
