Mrs. Witmer’s Writer’s Workshop - by Mrs. Randa Witmer
As the seasons are changing so are the students in first grade. In the few weeks that we have been back at school, my class has blossomed. This week in Writer’s Workshop, we are
actually starting to work on our compositional writing. With Grandparent/VIP day approaching, the students are starting to work on a writing piece about what they would like to do when they are grandparents. We are in the early stages of writing; in fact we are still just coming up with ideas. We thought there were many good ideas about what Grandparents do.

Here are a few of the thoughts the kids had.
I will teach my grandkids to cook.
I will have a big garden and grow vegetables and flowers and fruit.
I will take naps and snore a lot.
I will want to hunt and fish.
I will not work because I will be retired.
I will spend time with my grandkids.
I will knit.
I will take lots of vacations.
I will talk about my grandkids and show their pictures to everyone.

Miss DeKalb County
Congratulations to Mei-Lin Yeoh for winning the crown and title of Miss DeKalb County 2009. Mei-Lin is a junior here at Lakewood Park. When asked by a judge what Mei-Lin felt her greatest accomplishment was she answered “Just living my faith, trying to be a good Christian. To live my life for the Lord and to be the person the Lord intended me to be.”

Makenzie Dick was third runner up and was also awarded Miss Congeniality. Makenzie is a senior this year.

Lakewood Park is proud to have two beautiful girls represent us so well.

Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels
Welcome to the new year of collecting Box Tops and Campbell’s UPC labels and Tyson A+ labels. We will again have our classroom competition to see which class brings in the most Box Tops, soup label UPC’s and Tyson A+ labels. Please send in your labels to your child’s teacher so that they can make sure their class gets credit. The winning class gets a pizza lunch and the second place gets an ice cream treat. Over the years, we have earned a lot of money from Box Tops and enough soup labels to get playground equipment. Here are the websites for Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels for Education programs. They both have great websites with lots of information including recipes, promotions and ways for Lakewood to earn additional points/box tops. On the Box tops website you can sign up for Box tops online and get information on our school earnings (which are updated usually twice per year), shop at popular online retailers through the Box tops Marketplace, print coupons for Box Top products, get exclusive contests, bonus Box Top opportunities and giveaways to benefit Lakewood Park Christian School. Here are the links for the two different companies.

We must make a submission of Box Tops by the end of October so please send them in so we can tally them all up. It makes a huge difference ONE DIME AT A TIME. I will be sending in the Campbell’s labels in before the Christmas holidays so you can send those in soon too.

We encourage you to keep saving the Box Tops and soup label UPC’s and Tyson A+. If you have any questions about the programs or what to save, please call Jane Kaufman at 260-927-8101.

Destination: Book Fair
Our book fair will be held October 26-30. We will "travel" around the world searching out the best books to read. On October 29, we will host Dave and Neta Jackson, authors of the "Trailblazer" series as well as the "Yada, Yada Prayer Group" series. They will conduct writing workshops and story-times as well as a book signing from 1:15 - 2:30. Grandparents' Day will be Friday, October 30. Scholastic, the Circuit Rider, Reader's World and Books Are Fun will provide our books this year. If you would like to volunteer to help with the book fair that week and have not yet signed up or if you would like more information, please contact Mindy Bussen at tmbussen12@mchsi.com or Debbie Shirey at dshirey@lakewoodpark.org.

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT NEWS
We will be participating in a dessert fundraiser with Market Day. They are offering fourteen pies, cheesecakes and individual desserts which can be found on the Bonus Days order form along with prices and product descriptions. Order forms will be available to students on October 6 or orders can be made online at www.MarketDay.com. Deadline for orders is October 22 at noon. Desserts will be available for pick up on October 27. We have set a goal of 500 pies which would allow us to raise $1,875 toward the high school choir and band trip this spring to Branson, Missouri. If we reach our goal of 500 pies sold, Mr. Faur and Pastor Taylor have agreed to "pie in the face." Please help us reach our goal!

We still have a few ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS left from our sale. They are $25 and can be purchased at the school office.

Vision Screening
Vision screening will begin in October for students in third and eighth grade. First graders will be screened by Dr. Good and Dr. Johnson on November 11 @ 8am. If you are concerned about your child's vision, we would be glad to include them in our screening process. Please call the school nurse @ 260-925-5342, ext. 234 for questions.

Jogathon 2009
Only a God like you could be worthy of my praise, of all my hope and faith...To only a God like you, do we give our praise!” The words to “Only a God Like You” kept running through my mind as I saw students running, parents encouraging, many serving, and the pledges coming in. On Thursday morning before the Jog-a-Thon we were at $32,000 raised. That figure was much lower than the amount at the same time in previous years. It is easy to say that you are going to remain faithful, but not so easy to do when you realize you are $23,000 behind your goal the day before the event. By Thursday afternoon we were at $42,000. When I left here Thursday night, I kept reminding myself that God is in control and He will provide as He always has. Friday afternoon I was wheeling in the white board that we had used to tally the pledges and couldn’t help but be amazed that we were over $52,000. In just over 24 hours, more than $20,000 in pledges came in. “To only a God like you, do I give my praise.”
