Mrs. Krafft’s Third Grade Class Visits Fire Station - by Teri Krafft
The third grade classes traveled to the Auburn Fire Station on Grand staff Drive for Fire Safety Week. The students viewed a fire safety video which taught what to do if there is a fire in your home and how to safety escape a burning building. The students also visited the Survive Alive House to practicing exiting during a house fire. During the lesson, the fire alarms were going off and simulated smoke filled the house. Students learned to test a door before opening, how to slow the flow of smoke coming in a room, and how to safely exit. One important lesson learned during our visit was the need for each home to have a fire escape plan. The fire fighter also emphasized the need for students to know their home mailing address.
Lakewood Park Christian Cheerleading
Lakewood Park Cheerleading is getting underway with an informative parent meeting Tuesday, October 20th at 3:30 in the Mezzanine. (Room beside the athletic department, above the gym) This is open to all girls, in grades 5th - 12th, interested in being a part of the Panther Cheer Team. We will have separate elementary, middle school and high school squads. Our mission is to promote school spirit and team leadership while representing Lakewood Park in a Christ-like manner. Update from the Nurse:
In preparation for the influenza season, I would like to pass along some information from the Department of Health.
H1N1 is a respiratory disease with symptoms of fever (over 100), cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. It is recommended that this virus be treated like any other influenza virus. Please keep all ill children at home. Students must be free of fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing meds such as Tylenol or Motrin) before returning to school. Also, please have your child remain at home until excessive coughing and sneezing is resolved and the student feels well enough to participate in classroom activities.
Preventive measures include covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol based cleaners frequently, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth unnecessarily to prevent spreading germs, and avoid close contact with sick people. Thankfully, there have been no cases of H1N1 here at LPCS.

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT NEWS
We will be participating in a dessert fundraiser with Market Day. They are offering fourteen pies, cheesecakes and individual desserts which can be found on the Bonus Days order form along with prices and product descriptions. Order forms will be available to students on October 6 or orders can be made online at www.MarketDay.com. Deadline for orders is October 22 at noon. Desserts will be available for pick up on October 27. We have set a goal of 500 pies which would allow us to raise $1,875 toward the high school choir and band trip this spring to Branson, Missouri. If we reach our goal of 500 pies sold, Mr. Faur and Pastor Taylor have agreed to "pie in the face." Please help us reach our goal!
We still have a few ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS left from our sale. They are $25 and can be purchased at the school office.
Destination: Book Fair
Our book fair will be held October 26-30. We will "travel" around the world searching out the best books to read. On October 29, we will host Dave and Neta Jackson, authors of the "Trailblazer" series as well as the "Yada, Yada Prayer Group" series. They will conduct writing workshops and story-times as well as a book signing from 1:15 - 2:30. Grandparents' Day will be Friday, October 30. Scholastic, the Circuit Rider, Reader's World and Books Are Fun will provide our books this year. If you would like to volunteer to help with the book fair that week and have not yet signed up or if you would like more information, please contact Mindy Bussen at tmbussen12@mchsi.com or Debbie Shirey at dshirey@lakewoodpark.org.
