Athletic Entrance Getting New Look
If you haven’t entered through the Athletic entrance on the east side of the building in the last couple of weeks - you should… things are changing! Lakewood had a work day on October 30th and many showed up to show their support by pitching in and doing what needed to be done. Ceiling tiles, carpet, and tiling were removed. Walls were painted. The restrooms were cleaned and painted. The hand railings in the mezzanine were refinished, and much more. The project is still in progress, and we hope to have it completed within the next several weeks. Included in the renovations will be new trophy display cases, sponsored in part by a gift from the class of 2009, a new admission/information center, and large framed photographs of all of our sectional winning teams. There is still a lot to be done, and we can use your help. If you would be interested in helping in any way, please contact Coach Davis.

Thank you to so many of you who helped us achieve this renovation for pennies on the dollar with your labor and support.

Legislative Liaison
The Indiana Non-Public Education Association is asking each school to appoint a legislative liaison to assist with communication and coordination of legislative alerts, communications and activities at the local level. If you have an interest in public policy and are a good organizer and communicator please contact Colleen McCarthy at extension 219 or email her at cmccarthy@lakewoodpark.org to let her know you are interested in being our liaison.

Art Program Update - Piper Placencia
This is the sixth year for the art program here at Lakewood and it has been nice seeing the students grow in their creativity. The art room has been a very busy place through the first nine weeks of the school year. Elementary students have been working hard in art class to complete their special project that was to be displayed at the Book Fair. Their hard work paid off as their artwork looked great at the Book Fair. I hope you had a chance to appreciate these little artists. The middle school was dedicated more toward drawing, but we did have time to focus on watercolors painting and the highlight for the eighth grade was being able to do a sand painting where students create pictures of art using colored sand to cover their paper. The high school also experienced a change this year as we have an “art 1” high school class, “art 2” class and an “art 3” class. We have been working on two- dimensional designs at every level in high school but having the different levels has given the students an opportunity to create more advanced projects depending upon the level they are at.

H1N1 clinic - by Sharon Gilbert
The Dekalb County Health Dept. has scheduled the H1N1 clinic at our school for Thursday, November 19. Information and permission forms will be coming home with the students next week. Only students with a signed permit will be given the vaccination. A frequent question is "Should my child have the vaccination if they have had the influenza but were not tested?" The Health Department says yes. According to the CDC, there are several types of influenza circulating though H1N1 is the most common. Your child may have had one of the other strains.

Testing for influenza can detect Influenza A, but a positive result does not indicate it is specifically H1N1. The CDC is recommending people having tested positive be immunized because their illness may have been caused by one of the other Influenza A strains. We will keep you updated as we receive information.

It’s time to think about Science Fair!!!
The LPCS Science Fair will be held in the new gym January 25 & 26th. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to share their interest in science while learning how to develop presentation skills. It is open to all LPCS students grades K-12, and required for grades 6 & 7. (Projects selected for regionals will only come from grades 1-12.) Elementary teachers will have packets of information available for interested students. Mrs. Harding has information for the middle school and secondary students should contact Dr. Mafera or Mrs. Lantz. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Mafera @ lmafera@lakewoodpark.org
