Spiritual

PowerPlus

Chapel Notes

The spiritual aspect of Lakewood is more than a single issue. It is tied to all aspects of the school. The main focus of the school is to provide educational excellence for students. This is accomplished through providing a biblical foundation and framework for education that does more than provide information; it reaches to the heart and spirit of a student.

Our goal is to produce students who understand God’s purpose for their lives and seek to live each day to honor Him. We want students to understand the truth and live in harmony with it whether they are in the classroom, in athletic competition, in musical or artistic performance, or enjoying life with their friends.

Submitting the will of the human spirit to the will of the Holy Spirit is the real essence of spirituality. Our education is designed to lead students into this understanding.

PowerPlus

The PowerPlus program integrates chapel, small groups, and community service. The students are heavily involved in planning the content and flow of chapel. This ensures that chapel is going to be focused and relevant to our student body. After chapel, everyone breaks into small groups.

The groups are divided in a way that gives the best possible environment for cultivating unity and leadership within the school. The groups contain anywhere from 10 – 16 students. Each group has students from all grade levels 7-12. This allows our upperclassmen to know the younger students and vice versa. The groups are also divided between guys and girls, meaning that one group will have 7-12th grade boys and another would have 7-12th grade girls. Each small group is led by an adult supervisor who helps facilitate the group, rather than dictating what goes on in the group. The discussion during small group time comes directly from that day’s chapel topic.

When small group time is over, they head out for community service. This could range from visitation at a nursing home to cleanup projects in the community to projects at local churches. The possibilities are really limitless!

We run the PowerPlus program on Wednesdays. The logic behind that is twofold.
1) We have already made a commitment to assigning no homework on Wednesdays to help promote youth group attendance. 2) For the same reason, we do not schedule athletic events on Wednesdays, so transportation and students leaving early will not conflict.

The students attend four normal classes, in the morning, prior to the PowerPlus program. The following week, the students would attend their afternoon classes, in the morning, prior to the PowerPlus program. This helps limit the amount of instructional time that students miss. Basically, for each academic class, the students attend 4 ½ class periods rather than 5 full class periods. This equates to about 20 minutes of lost instructional time during the week for each class. It is a sacrifice. However, PowerPlus allows us to focus on our “more neglected” core values while still maintaining focus on academic excellence!

PowerPlus has been in place since the beginning of the 2005 – 2006 school year. Great effort from the staff and students has helped make it a relatively easy transition into the program. We have been able to provide community service for several non-profit organizations, as well as some individuals who were in need of help during the school year. We continue to seek new service opportunities and encourage the students to internalize their efforts and seek out their own ways to help in the community.
